Metal Letters vs Mini Acrylic Letters: Choosing the Right Material
Metal and acrylic are the two workhorse materials of dimensional letters. Neither is "better"; they solve different briefs. This comparison covers what sign companies should weigh when specifying one or the other.
Construction and depth
Metal letters are fabricated from stainless steel, aluminium, or coated steel sheet, typically with returns from 20 mm upward. They read as solid, architectural objects and age well on facades. Mini acrylic letters are laser-cut from acrylic panels at much smaller depths, which is what allows the crisp small text — wayfinding lines, desk names, door signs — that metal fabrication cannot produce economically.
Illumination options
Metal letters support front-lit, backlit (halo), and front-and-back combinations; a backlit stainless letter on a dark facade is the classic architectural statement. Mini acrylic letters are usually edge-lit or face-lit in interior applications, but many interior projects use them unlit, where their edge quality and paint finish carry the design.
Weight, mounting and substrate
Weight differs by an order of magnitude at comparable sizes, and that changes the mounting conversation: mini acrylic letters often mount with standoffs or adhesive on glass and painted drywall, while metal letters may need reinforced fixing points on the substrate. Confirm the wall build-up before quoting either family.
Finishes
Metal offers brushed, mirror, and powder-coated finishes; acrylic accepts painted faces in any RAL reference. A frequent combination on one elevation: brushed metal for the main brand line, painted mini acrylic for secondary information — same design language, different roles.
How they fit one project
Both families are manufactured to specification: letter heights from 1 cm to 300 cm, MOQ 1, and about 10–12 days production after the drawing is approved. Because one factory produces both, finishes and colour temperature can be matched across the elevation instead of negotiated between two suppliers.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better for outdoor use, metal or acrylic?
Metal letters are the standard choice for primary outdoor identity because of rigidity and finish durability; acrylic is used outdoors mainly in larger face-lit constructions. The environment — indoor or outdoor — must be confirmed before production so the protection level matches.
Can mini acrylic letters be illuminated?
Yes, typically edge-lit or face-lit for interior applications. Many interior projects also use them unlit.
What letter heights are possible in each family?
Both families are custom-made; heights from 1 cm to 300 cm are supported depending on the product and mounting.
