Indoor vs Outdoor Signs: Why the IP Rating Must Be Confirmed Before Production

Published 2026-10-27 · Huizhou Pexeo Signage Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

The same logo can be built two completely different ways depending on where it will hang. The difference is summarised by the ingress-protection (IP) rating — and it is the single most common specification gap in custom sign enquiries.

What the rating actually covers

An IP rating has two digits: the first covers solids and dust, the second covers water. An interior reception sign in a dry, climate-controlled lobby operates in a benign environment. A facade sign faces rain driven sideways, temperature swings, and UV exposure. The build responds to all three: sealing of the face and back, drainage consideration at the bottom of housings, power supply enclosures, and cable glands.

Why it cannot be adjusted after the fact

Sealing is decided by the construction method — welding, gaskets, potting of modules, and the choice of diffuser materials. Once a sign is fabricated for interior use, retrofitting it to an outdoor rating is not a service visit; it is a rebuild. That is why at PEXEO the indoor or outdoor environment is confirmed before production starts, not after the sign is on the truck.

What buyers should state in the enquiry

Three facts are enough: the installation environment (indoor, outdoor, or both for a combined elevation), the geographic climate if outdoor (coastal salt air and freezing cycles matter), and the mounting position (exposed canopy, recessed soffit, or open facade). With those, the factory selects the correct construction the first time.

Mixed elevations are the normal case

A typical commercial project places backlit channel letters on the exposed facade and a faux-neon script in the protected interior. Both are custom-made — letter heights from 1 cm to 300 cm, MOQ 1, around 10–12 days production after confirmation — but the two elements will carry different protection builds, and that is correct, not inconsistent.

The takeaway

The IP question costs one line in an email and prevents the most expensive kind of mistake in signage: a sign that was built well for the wrong place. Confirm the environment in writing before the drawing is approved.

Frequently asked questions

Can one sign be rated for both indoor and outdoor use?

An outdoor-rated construction can be installed indoors, but the reverse does not hold. State the environment before production; the rating is confirmed at specification stage.

Does the IP rating change the lead time?

It can affect material selection and sealing steps, which is why the environment is confirmed before the drawing is approved. Standard production is approximately 10–12 days after confirmation.

What should I tell the factory about the installation site?

Whether the sign is indoors or outdoors, the climate if outdoors, and the mounting position. These three facts determine the protection build.
