Channel Letter Sizes: What the 1–300 cm Height Range Means for a Project

Published 2026-10-27 · Huizhou Pexeo Signage Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

"Any height from 1 cm to 300 cm" is a manufacturing envelope, not a design recommendation. It tells you the factory can produce both a desk name and a three-metre rooftop logo. It does not tell you which height your project should use. This note covers the measurements that actually decide the build and what to send when you ask for a quotation.

Cap height, overall width, and stroke width

Three numbers define a letter, and most enquiries contain only one of them. Cap height is the height of a capital letter. Overall width is the full sign band, which is what a landlord or a planning condition usually limits. Stroke width is the thickness of the letter's arm — and it is the number that constrains production.

Below a certain stroke width there is no room inside a letter for an LED module and its wiring, so a face-lit letter stops being a lit letter and becomes a flat illuminated shape. Very thin scripts and hairline typefaces also lose their edge definition at small sizes. If all you have is the overall width, send that plus the artwork: the factory can derive cap height and stroke width and put them on the drawing for approval.

Height and viewing distance

Height is chosen for the distance the sign has to work at. A reception sign read from two metres and a facade sign read from across a car park are different products that happen to share a logo. Rather than reaching for a rule of thumb, state the viewing distance and the mounting height in the enquiry; the drawing that comes back will carry a height that suits them. What the factory cannot infer is any planning or landlord maximum on sign height — that is yours to supply.

Return depth follows height

Return depth — how far the letter stands off the wall — scales with the letter. Small letters stay shallow, because a deep return on a 5 cm letter looks wrong and wastes space on a tight elevation. Large letters need depth for the structure to stay rigid and, on halo-lit work, for the light to spread. For backlit letters the depth sets how far the light throws onto the wall, so halo size is a depth decision rather than a brightness one.

This is also why two letters of the same cap height from two different factories look different: the return depth is a design variable, not a fixed consequence of the height.

Where the small end of the range is used

Heights of a few centimetres are the territory of mini acrylic letters: door signs, desk names, wayfinding lines, and reception logos. At this scale, edge quality and paint finish matter more than illumination, and many interior projects use these letters unlit. Metal letters cover the middle ground where a solid, non-illuminated architectural letter is wanted.

Where the large end is used

Above roughly a metre, the constraints stop being optical and become structural and logistical. Fixing points multiply, weight rises, and a letter may be split into sections so it can be handled and installed — which in turn changes where the joints fall and how the wiring is routed. Tell the factory the mounting substrate and whether there is scaffold, lift, or crane access, because both change how the letter is sectioned and how the fixing pattern is laid out.

What to send for a quotation

Artwork in any file format, or a photograph if that is all the client has — the factory can redraw it. The installed cap height, or the overall width if that is all you know. The mounting substrate and whether the sign is indoors or outdoors, because the two are built differently and the protection level is confirmed before production starts.

The commercial terms do not change with size: custom heights from 1 cm to 300 cm, a minimum order quantity of 1, and about 10–12 days production after the drawing is approved. Start at the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest letter you can produce?

Letters are custom-made and heights from 1 cm to 300 cm are produced. The practical floor is set by stroke width: very thin strokes at small heights cannot house lighting, so those are usually produced unlit or in the mini acrylic family.

Can I order a single large letter?

Yes. The minimum order quantity is 1, so a single letter or a single word follows the same process as a volume order.

Do very large letters take longer to produce?

Standard custom production is approximately 10–12 days after the drawing is approved. Unusual sizes, sectioning, or special mounting are confirmed on the drawing before production starts, so any effect on timing is visible before you approve.

I only know the overall width of the sign band — is that enough?

Yes as a starting point. Send the artwork with it and the cap height and stroke width will be derived and shown on the shop drawing for approval.
