Front-Lit vs Backlit Channel Letters: What Sign Buyers Should Specify

Published 2026-10-26 · Huizhou Pexeo Signage Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

When a client asks for channel letters, one of the first decisions is how the light should leave the sign: through the front face, or backward against the wall. That choice — front-lit versus backlit — changes the daytime look, the nighttime look, and which materials make sense. This guide explains both, with no assumption about which is "better", so you can specify the right one.

Front-lit channel letters

Front-lit (also called face-lit) letters have a translucent face — usually acrylic or polycarbonate — with LED modules mounted behind it. The light shines through the face, so the letter reads as a lit panel in its chosen colour. This is the most common configuration for exterior identification signs because it stays readable both day and night and at distance.

Because the face is the lit surface, front-lit letters work with most PEXEO families: metal letters with a lit face, trimless/frameless letters, mini acrylic letters, and seamless/no-edge letters can all be built front-lit.

Backlit channel letters

Backlit (also called reverse or halo-lit) letters have an opaque front face — often brushed metal or painted acrylic — and the LEDs point backward toward the mounting wall. The light does not come through the face; instead it spills out around the letter and onto the wall, producing a soft halo. The letter face itself stays dark, so by day the sign reads as a dimensional letter in its material, and by night it gains a glow outline.

PEXEO's backlit letters are built this way. The halo effect depends on the gap between the letter and the wall (standoff distance), which is part of the specification.

Daytime vs nighttime appearance

Front-lit: the face shows its colour whether the LEDs are on or off (the colour is in the face material), so the sign looks on-brand in daylight and illuminated at night. Backlit: by day the letter shows its raw face material with little visible light; at night the halo appears. If you want the letters themselves to glow in daylight, front-lit is the straightforward choice; if you want a subtler, premium halo, backlit fits.

Where each tends to fit

Front-lit is the default for primary exterior signage — storefronts, building identification, mall units — where legibility at distance matters. Backlit is common for upscale interiors (hotel lobbies, restaurants, corporate walls) and for exterior walls of stone, glass, or textured material where a halo reads well against the surface. Many projects use both: front-lit on the exterior for identification, backlit inside for ambience.

Specifying either with PEXEO

Both methods are manufactured to your specification. Letter height is customizable from 1 cm to 300 cm. The minimum order quantity is 1, so a single feature wall and a multi-tenant building are handled the same way. After the specification is confirmed, production typically runs about 10–12 days.

Artwork can be supplied in any file format, or PEXEO's team can design the artwork from your brief. One point that is easy to miss: indoor and outdoor signs need different ingress-protection ratings, and that rating must be confirmed before production starts — tell your supplier where the sign will live. When the brief is ready, send it through the PEXEO contact page.

Specification checklist

Before requesting a quote, note the letter height, the face material and colour, whether you want face-lit or halo, the mounting method, and the installation environment (indoor or outdoor). With those fields, a manufacturer can return an accurate quote and a build that matches the wall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between front-lit and backlit channel letters?

Front-lit letters shine through a translucent face, so the letter itself glows. Backlit (reverse) letters have an opaque face and shine backward, producing a halo on the wall behind them.

Are backlit letters visible during the day?

Yes. By day they read as dimensional letters in their face material (metal, paint, or acrylic); the halo appears when the LEDs are on at night.

Can I use both front-lit and backlit in one project?

Commonly, yes — front-lit for exterior identification and backlit for interior brand walls, or both on one facade for a layered effect.

What do I need to specify for either type?

Letter height (1–300 cm customizable), face material and colour, face-lit vs halo, mounting method, and whether the sign is indoor or outdoor (the IP rating differs).
