Backlit Channel Letters: How They Are Made and Where to Use Them

Published 2026-10-25 · Huizhou Pexeo Signage Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

Backlit channel letters — often called halo-lit or reverse-lit — light the wall behind the letter rather than the face. The result is a soft glow around each letter, which reads as premium and is common on hotels, corporate HQs and flagship retail.

How they are built

Each letter is a fabricated housing with the LED mounted to shine backward against the wall. The face is typically opaque, so the lit area is the halo, not the letter face. Construction follows the same custom process as other channel letters: specified height (1 cm to 300 cm), chosen material, and a mounting method suited to the wall.

Where backlit works best

Backlit letters suit surfaces where a glow reads well — light-coloured or textured walls, recessed entries, and interiors where the brand wants a calm, high-end look. They are less suited to situations needing maximum daytime face legibility from a distance, where front-lit is usually clearer.

Specifying a backlit order

Confirm the wall material and standoff distance, the letter height, and whether the location is indoor or outdoor (rating differs). Production after confirmation is about 10–12 days, with MOQ 1.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between backlit and front-lit channel letters?

Are backlit letters good for outdoor use?

Yes, with the correct outdoor ingress-protection rating, which is confirmed before production.

What letter heights are available?

Customizable from 1 cm to 300 cm per project.
